Artist Profile - The Artist Josef

I am fascinated by the extraordinary stories carried within ordinary lives.

Whether painting a child discovering the world, a couple sharing a quiet moment, a fisherman at work, or a family gathered along the shoreline, I am drawn to the moments that reveal our common humanity. My work explores themes of connection, memory, resilience, hope, love, loss, and the relationships that shape us.

Although I paint a wide variety of subjects—including portraits, landscapes, seascapes, and narrative scenes—the thread connecting my work is an ongoing exploration of human nature. I am interested not only in what people look like, but in what they feel, remember, fear, celebrate, and carry with them through life.

Light plays a central role in my paintings. Sometimes it is literal sunlight, moonlight, or the glow of a distant horizon. More often it serves as a symbol of memory, possibility, faith, or the enduring spirit that connects one generation to the next.

My style blends realism and impressionism, allowing detail and atmosphere to work together. I want viewers to feel invited into the painting rather than simply observe it. Loose brushwork, expressive color, and carefully directed light help create space for viewers to bring their own experiences and stories into the work.

My artistic journey began as a child watching my grandfather paint. As a teenager, I experimented with oils and pastels before life's responsibilities led me down a different path. An Aerospace Engineering graduate of the University of Virginia, I spent more than three decades building a career in mortgage banking while raising a family.

In my early fifties, I returned to painting with a renewed sense of purpose. The decades spent raising children, building a career, traveling, experiencing loss, celebrating milestones, and becoming a grandfather enriched my understanding of the very subjects that now inspire my work.

Today I divide my time between Arlington, Virginia and Dewey Beach, Delaware, where I continue to paint stories of place, memory, and human connection.
